The Fusion Thermal WAVE Tempest 335 LRF is a thermal riflescope with a laser rangefinder built into the housing, so you see the heat signature and get the distance to it in the same view. Why the built in rangefinder matters
Ranging a target with a separate handheld unit at night means taking your eye off the scope, finding the animal again in a rangefinder with no thermal, and then coming back to the rifle. A rangefinder in the scope removes all of that. You put the reticle on the animal, press the button, read the number, hold accordingly. If you keep a simple dope card for your load, the number becomes a hold in about a second.
Living with it
Mount it on a solid rail and zero it on a heat source, then range a few known distances so you trust the number it gives you in the field. A thermal with an active rangefinder draws more power than a day scope, so carry spare power for a long night. Keep the objective and the rangefinder window clean, and store it dry between hunts.
