Ammo Shipping Restrictions by State
We send ammunition to most of the country without any fuss. There are 4 states where it has to go to a licensed dealer instead of your door, 3 we cannot reach at all, and 4 where we need a document from you first. Everywhere else, it comes straight to you.
Where it goes to a dealer, not your door
In California, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York the order ships to a licensed dealer and you collect it there.
California
We ship to a licensed California ammunition vendor and you collect it there in person. That holds whichever way the current court case lands.
What you need
- California ID
- 18 or over for long gun ammunition, 21 or over for handgun ammunition
- Whatever the vendor asks of you at collection, which depends on where the court case has got to
The rules here are unsettled. California's ammunition rules are unsettled right now and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The background check requirement was challenged in Rhode v. Bonta. A district court struck it down in January 2024, a Ninth Circuit panel agreed in July 2025, the court then reheard the case before eleven judges, and that en banc court has since affirmed the injunction against enforcement. None of that takes effect until the court issues its mandate, and California may still ask the Supreme Court to step in. The state's own guidance to dealers has not been updated since July 2025. So we send your order to a licensed vendor, which is lawful either way, and your vendor will tell you what is required of you on the day. New York
We ship to a licensed dealer in New York. You collect it there after the state check.
What you need
- Photo ID at collection
- A New York State Police background check on every ammunition purchase
- The dealer's transfer fee, usually around $25, on top of the state fee of about $2.50
Since September 2023 New York has required a background check on every ammunition purchase under the Concealed Carry Improvement Act. Ammunition cannot be sent straight to a home address.
Massachusetts
We ship to a Massachusetts dealer. You collect it there.
What you need
- An FID card for rifle and shotgun ammunition that is not large capacity or semiautomatic
- An LTC for all lawful types, or an FID plus a handgun purchase permit for handgun ammunition
- 18 or over for long gun ammunition, 21 or over for handgun, semiautomatic or large capacity
Massachusetts law requires a licence to buy or possess ammunition. It does not itself require delivery to a dealer. The reason we send it to one is that UPS and FedEx will not carry ammunition to a residential address in Massachusetts, whatever licence you hold. Carrier limit, not state law
New Jersey
We do not drop ship ammunition to New Jersey homes. Handgun calibres need your documents on file before we send anything.
What you need
- For handgun calibres, an FPIC card, a permit to purchase a handgun, or a carry permit, and you must be 21 or over
- For rifle and shotgun ammunition, no state permit is needed, and a New Jersey hunting licence is also accepted
New Jersey treats handgun ammunition as any calibre that can be fired in a handgun. That catches several rounds people think of as rifle calibres, so check before you assume your order is exempt.
To your door, once you have sent us a document
Illinois
We ship to your door, but only to the address printed on your FOID card or your Illinois ID.
What you need
- A valid FOID card
- Your Illinois driver's licence or state ID
- A FOID card requires you to be 21 or over, or to have written parental consent
Illinois requires a Firearm Owner's Identification card to acquire ammunition. For an out of state purchase you send us a copy of the FOID card and your Illinois licence or ID, and we may only ship to an address shown on one of those documents.
Not available in Chicago, Cook County.
Connecticut
We ship to your door once your certificate is on file.
What you need
- A pistol permit, a long gun eligibility certificate, or an ammunition certificate from DESPP which costs $35 and lasts five years
- Your Connecticut driver's licence or state ID showing your date of birth
Connecticut requires one of those three credentials before ammunition may be transferred to you.
Colorado
We ship to your door. The carrier will check the age of whoever takes the parcel.
What you need
- 21 or over for rifle and shotgun ammunition, shown with a government photo ID
- Someone 21 or over must take the delivery and sign for it
- Rimfire is exempt, so .22 LR is still an 18 and over purchase
Colorado's HB25-1133 came into force on 1 July 2026. It raises the age for rifle and shotgun ammunition and requires the carrier to verify age and take a written acknowledgement at the door.
Several groups aged 18 to 20 are still allowed to buy: anyone born on or before 28 January 2007 until January 2028, serving military, National Guard and veterans with valid ID, holders of hunter education certification or a hunting licence, range purchases for use on site, and the protected party under an active protection order.
Rhode Island
We ship to your door once your certificate is on file.
What you need
- 21 or over, and this applies to all ammunition rather than only handgun ammunition
- A pistol or revolver safety certificate, known as the blue card, or a hunter education card
Rhode Island raised the age to 21 across all ammunition and requires one of those certificates.
Magazines are a separate question
This catches people out. A state can take ammunition without any restriction at all and still refuse magazines over a certain size. Washington is the clearest example: ammunition arrives at your door normally, while anything over ten rounds cannot be sold or shipped there.
